Next Hydrogen Reaches Milestone with Successful Durability Test of GEN2 Electrolysis Cells

October 15, 2024 by Robert Lewis

Mississauga-based Next Hydrogen has successfully completed an extended durability test of its GEN2 electrolysis cells, marking a significant step toward commercial deployment of its green hydrogen technology.

The GEN2 cells, which achieved leading efficiency in October 2023, are set to be integrated into Next Hydrogen’s electrolyzers at customer sites.

Next Hydrogen’s GEN2 cells outperformed U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) technical targets for energy efficiency, operating below 1.9 volts per cell at 1 amp/cm² and 70°C.

The cells also demonstrated exceptional flexibility, with a best-in-class turn-down of 10%, making them ideal for direct renewable energy connections. Notably, the cells withstood over 3,000 hours of cyclic testing under intermittent conditions, a critical requirement for renewable energy systems.

“We are thrilled to reach this milestone as we move toward product commercialization,” said Raveel Afzaal, President and CEO of Next Hydrogen. The company plans to deploy GEN2 cells in electrolyzer units ranging from 0.75MW to 2.25MW. Afzaal also hinted at future innovations, announcing plans for a larger, more efficient GEN3 version in 2025.

Founded in 2007, Next Hydrogen specializes in electrolyzer technology, converting renewable electricity into green hydrogen to help decarbonize transportation and industry. The company’s patented cell design offers high current density and dynamic response, positioning it as a leader in green hydrogen production.
