In a major milestone for Canadian aviation and sustainability, Air Canada has become the first airline to purchase low-carbon aviation fuel (LCAF) produced domestically. The fuel, created by Parkland at its Burnaby Refinery, represents a significant step toward reducing aviation sector emissions and fostering a sustainable future.
The pilot batch of approximately 101,000 litres of LCAF was crafted using non-food-grade canola and tallow as core feedstocks. Parkland’s achievement positions Canada on the global map for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, traditionally reliant on international imports.
“This represents our first commercial purchase of Canadian-produced low-carbon aviation fuel,” said Michael Rousseau, President and CEO of Air Canada. “Parkland’s accomplishment is a critical first step in creating a domestic supply. LCAF and SAF are essential components of our approach to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and promoting environmental sustainability.”

The initiative was supported by the Government of British Columbia, which has been a leader in incentivizing innovation to combat climate change. Adrian Dix, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions, lauded the collaboration: “British Columbia leads the way in reducing emissions across many sectors. Parkland’s success is a testament to what can be achieved with forward-thinking policies and partnerships.”
Parkland’s Senior Vice President, Ferio Pugliese, highlighted the significance of the project: “Thanks to the vision of our team, the leadership of the Government of British Columbia, and Air Canada, Canadians can see the possibility of flying with Canadian-made low-carbon fuel.”
As the aviation industry strives to meet Canada’s 2050 net-zero targets, the development of a competitive domestic SAF market is seen as crucial. Air Canada’s call for continued government support underscores the importance of balanced policies to drive the growth of sustainable aviation solutions.
The Burnaby Refinery’s groundbreaking production demonstrates that Canada has the expertise and infrastructure to lead in sustainable fuel innovation. With LCAF offering lower lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions and compatibility with existing aircraft, this achievement marks a transformative moment for Canadian aviation and environmental stewardship.
