DEEP Earth Energy and SLB Partner to Develop Canada’s First Next-Generation Geothermal Project

February 5, 2025 by Newsdesk

DEEP Earth Energy Production (DEEP) has teamed up with global energy technology company SLB (NYSE: SLB) to develop Canada’s first next-generation geothermal project in southeast Saskatchewan. With the feasibility phase now complete, the project is set to produce up to 30 MW of emissions-free power once its first two phases are finished, marking a key moment for geothermal energy in Canada.

While Canada has large geothermal potential, the resource has remained underused due to technical and economic challenges. DEEP’s project plans to tackle these issues by using advanced horizontal drilling techniques from the oil and gas industry. These methods will help access the most productive geothermal zones, along with new technologies to increase power output. SLB will provide expertise in geothermal technology, well construction, and drilling to help make this project a reality.

“We’re excited to partner with SLB on this groundbreaking project, which also involves Ormat. Together, we’re combining the best subsurface and surface technologies to increase efficiency and power output,” said Kirsten Marcia, president and CEO of DEEP. “Our goal is to set a new standard for future geothermal projects in Canada and contribute to the country’s emissions reduction and energy security goals.”

As part of the partnership, SLB will support the project’s first two phases by providing engineering design and well construction services. This includes developing two production and two injection wells in phase one, and up to 18 wells in phase two. The project will leverage the natural properties of the rock formation to produce geothermal energy more reliably and sustainably.

“This collaboration with DEEP is about making geothermal energy more accessible and reducing risks,” said Irlan Amir, vice president of Renewables and Energy Efficiency at SLB. “It’s a model for new geothermal power generation projects in Canada and beyond.”

By addressing challenges and using innovative techniques, DEEP’s geothermal project is set to play a key role in the future of renewable energy in Canada.
