Montreal’s Relocalize Powers Hyperlocal Logistics Through Micro-Factory Platform

April 2, 2025 by Knowlton Thomas

Relocalize emerged in 2025 from a big year.

In February, the company was recognized by the CIX Startup Awards, a showcase of Canada’s rising stars. The honour followed a strong 2024 for the firm.

Food production contributes to over one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, with raw agricultural products alone making up nearly one-third of all road freight. The Montreal-based logistics technology startup, founded in 2021, is looking to revolutionize food supply chains with its flagship product.

How? Relocalize is behind advanced micro-factories that produce, package, and palletize food directly at distribution centres, eliminating middle-mile logistics.

This approach reduces greenhouse gas emissions by lowering the energy cost of production.

“At the intersection of cleantech and foodtech, our innovative approach provides grocery retailers with a streamlined, cost-effective supply chain, offering fresh, high-quality, sustainable products,” reads a statement from the company.

Last year, Relocalize secured an oversubscribed $5.8 million fundraising round to decarbonize food supply chains through cleantech.

Cycle Momentum co-invested in the round alongside i4 Capital, Desjardins Capital, Waterpoint Lane, and RGS Ice.

The capital was earmarked for the Canadian startup to scale up its autonomous microfactory platform.

Positioned hyper-locally at retailer distribution and fulfillment centers, Relocalize’s micro-factories produce CPG products on-demand for up to 200 retail stores. Each one can perform the functions of a traditional factory at less than one-tenth the scale.

“Relocalize is bringing innovation to the food and beverage supply chain, to address emissions from transportation and cold-chain storage,” Jennifer McDonald, Senior VP at Investments Cycle Momentum, commented in October.

“We believe that Relocalize’s micro-manufacturing technology will help reinvent the way consumers access quality food and beverage products,” Tim Tokarsky, Founder of i4 Capital, added at the time. “The world’s first hyper-local micro-factory for packaged ice is just the beginning; numerous applications will leverage their disruptive manufacturing platform, directly cutting GHG emissions.”

Relocalize, which has also been innovating ice cubes, was recently recognized by Foresight Canada in the latest Foresight 50 list, an annual ranking of the nation’s rising clean technology firms.
