A transit solutions startup today announced a major customer.
Toronto’s Argo Corporation, which launched last year, this week announced a $10.9 million, 12 month long pilot with the City of Brampton to deploy its fully electric “Smart Routing” transit system.
Slated to launch this summer, Argo’s pilot with Brampton will see residents will be able to request on-demand rides near their door for a standard fare with seamless transfers into Brampton Transit and GO Transit networks, according to a statement from the Canadian company.
“This pilot with Argo represents our commitment to implementing outcomes that better serve our community,” stated Brampton mayor Patrick Brown.
Brampton is home to nearly 800,000 people and more than 100,000 businesses. It’s a big step up for Argo’s tech stack, whose first deployment was in Bradford West Gwillimbury—a population of roughly 43,000.
Argo’s Smart Routing platform has riders request trips through an app or phone call, with stops dynamically added based on real-time demand. For “last miles,” the Argo X1 Vehicle is an accessible electric vehicle by Karsan integrated with Argo’s proprietary Smart Routing hardware.
The routing platform is also integrated with the existing fare systems, such as those of Brampton Transit and GO Transit.
“By adopting Argo’s comprehensive system as a complement to our existing transit network, we’re bringing Brampton to the forefront of transit innovation while creating more efficient and accessible transportation options and ‘last mile’ solutions for our residents,” Mayor Brown said.
The pilot aims to enhance mobility and accessibility among underserved demographics in Brampton, such as seniors and the disabled, while supporting local job creation and showcasing Canadian innovation, according to Praveen Arichandran, cofounder of Argo.
“Brampton is home not only to a thriving Innovation District, but also to one of the fastest-growing and most robust public transit networks in the country,” noted Arichandran, who serves Argo as chief executive officer.
“We’re proud to partner with Brampton on a global stage to develop advanced mobility systems, strengthen existing public transit infrastructure, and create a more connected, accessible, and prosperous future,” the entrepreneur remarked.
By integrating every aspect of the transit experience, Argo believes it can enable municipalities to operate “dynamically optimized transit systems that deliver substantially better efficiency, coverage, and rider satisfaction, all while maintaining standard public transit pricing.”
