Vancouver’s Svante, a global leader in carbon capture and removal technologies, has officially completed commissioning of its new Centre of Excellence for Carbon Capture and Removal – the Redwood manufacturing facility – in Burnaby, British Columbia.
The 141,000-square-foot Redwood Facility marks a global first: a gigafactory dedicated solely to producing commercial-scale carbon capture and removal filters. Designed for high-volume automation and standardized production, the facility is capable of manufacturing enough solid sorbent-based filters to capture up to 10 million tonnes of CO₂ annually—roughly equivalent to the emissions from 27 million cars.
“Today, we are making history,” said Claude Letourneau, President and CEO of Svante. “This gigafactory is a critical step forward in building the infrastructure necessary to scale up the carbon management industry and to build a marketplace for physical CO₂.”
The facility’s filters, coated with metal-organic framework (MOF), are a next-generation solution for trapping CO₂ directly from industrial emissions and the atmosphere. Svante is currently targeting biogenic carbon dioxide removal (CDR) sectors such as pulp and paper, ethanol, and waste-to-energy—industries where post-combustion CO₂ concentrations are higher and capture costs are lower, enabling the generation of CDR credits.
Letourneau emphasized the facility’s strategic location, adding, “We’re also proud to launch this transformative manufacturing facility in Canada, which allows us to bring the supply chain to our shores and bring carbon management solutions closer to the needs of emitting industries in North America.”
Funded by a US $145 million capital investment, Redwood is backed by strategic investors including Chevron New Energies, Temasek, M&G, Canada Growth Fund, United Airlines Ventures, Samsung, and GE Vernova.
The company anticipates that additional gigafactories like Redwood will be needed over the next decade to meet growing global demand.
Svante’s technology is already deployed in major pilot projects, including Chevron’s Kern River site in California and Project CO₂MENT at Lafarge’s Richmond Cement Plant in BC. Svante also manufactures filters for Climeworks’ latest Gen 3 direct air capture (DAC) systems, which are designed to double capture capacity and reduce the cost of regenerative energy by half.
With Redwood now online, Svante is demonstrating its readiness to deliver carbon capture solutions at scale and reinforcing its leadership position in the global carbon management market.
