Alberta to Discuss Climatech Innovation and ‘Ethical’ Energy Partnerships in Washington

June 3, 2025 by Knowlton Thomas

Alberta has long been recognized for its significant involvement in the fossil fuel sector, famous for its vast oil sands.

Increasingly, the province is also a hotbed for innovation in clean energy, especially hydrogen, as well as wind and solar.

Regardless of the source, Alberta aims for all of its energy to be “ethically produced.”

But that is just the beginning, according to the region’s political leadership.

This month, Alberta is heading to Washington, D.C. to “lay the foundation for advancing North American energy dominance.”

In the U.S. this week, a delegation including Premier Danielle Smith has plans to meet with technology innovators and American government officials to advance energy-related partnerships.

“Alberta’s energy future is unstoppable and has a key role to play in helping the U.S. meet its growing energy needs and global energy dominance ambition in a secure and reliable way unmatched by any other energy partner,” Smith stated.

The province has a “competitive electricity market and business-friendly environment,” according to minister Nathan Neudorf, rendering Alberta “a destination of choice for investors and a leader in innovative technologies.”

Neudorf says he intends to “carry that message to our partners south of the border.”

The delegation’s itinerary includes attending the Energy Council’s 2025 Federal Energy and Environmental Matters Conference, the U.S. Energy Streams 10th Washington Energy Forum, and the S&P Global Oil Sands Dialogue.

The work aligns with Alberta’s Emissions Reduction and Energy Development Plan, which aspires to achieve a carbon neutral economy by 2050.

“Alberta can play a crucial role in advancing North American energy dominance and we will work on the partnerships that will lead to a secure energy future,” stated Brian Jean, Minister of Energy and Minerals.

Chantelle de Jonge, parliamentary secretary for Affordability and Utilities, describes the province as “a global leader in responsible energy development.”

“I look forward to working with our U.S. partners to advance new opportunities in our energy sector that will reap benefits on both sides of the border,” said de Jonge.
