IKEA Celebrates Milestone as Iconic Retailer Ramps Up Zero-Emission Delivery Program

September 22, 2025 by Knowlton Thomas

IKEA Canada recently shared a “significant milestone” with regards to the retailer’s journey toward maximum energy efficiency.

The iconic brand was established in Älmhult, Småland in July of 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad, who began his business by fulfilling mail-orders via bicycle. And after 80 years of Swedish heritage, the retailer continues to innovate operations, constantly pursuing more efficient methods of running a brick-and-mortar business with a heavy default footprint.

IKEA Canada stated this month that in August, more than 70% of its big truck home deliveries were completed using electric vehicles.

That figure marks a new high for the retailer, whose goal is to reach 90% zero-emission deliveries by 2028.

The progress hails from “investments in EV charging infrastructure,” according to Liz Wilson, who serves as Head of Customer Fulfilment, as well through “strong collaboration with our delivery service partners.”

Specifically, IKEA Canada has invested nearly $4 million, supported by over $1.1M in funding from Natural Resources Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program and other partners, to have EV fleet chargers installed at all 17 IKEA home delivery fulfilment units across Canada.

“Having more of our truck home deliveries fulfilled by EVs than diesel trucks in August 2025 is an incredible milestone in advancing IKEA Canada’s sustainability goals,” Wilson remarked, adding that “IKEA customers never have to pay a premium for zero emission deliveries, reflecting our dedication to making sustainable choices both accessible and affordable for the many.”

IKEA Canada is part of the Ingka Group, which operates nearly 500 IKEA stores across more than 30 countries.

In Canada, IKEA operates 16 locations, which welcome a combined 28 million in-store visitors and 166 million online consumers annually.

In 2023, IKEA Canada unveiled $400M earmarked for expanding fulfillment capabilities coast-to-coast.
