NEO Battery Materials announced this week that it is working with a U.S.-based technology company specializing in the development and production of high-performance lithium-iron-phosphate cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
Toronto’s NEO says it has entered into a Joint Product Development Agreement with Nascent Materials, which launched out of New Jersey last year to develop advanced manufacturing technologies that produce cost-effective, high-performance cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
Through the agreement, NEO and Nascent will jointly design and develop high-performance lithium-ion batteries by integrating NEO’s silicon anode materials with Nascent’s proprietary materials.
“Our collaboration with NEO Battery represents a critical step toward integrating next-generation anode and cathode technologies that redefine what is possible in lithium-ion performance,” stated Chaitanya Sharma, chief executive officer of Nascent Materials.
The collaboration targets two specific battery system applications, according to Sharma: high-energy-density batteries for defence drone systems and storage systems for AI data centres and power grid storage.
“By combining NEO’s silicon-based anode innovation with our proprietary … technologies, we are enabling a new class of batteries that unite high energy density, rapid charge rates, and exceptional safety,” said Sharma, which are “essential for defence, drone, and AI energy storage applications.”
For drone defence, NEO and Nascent intend to develop low-cost, lightweight, and energy-dense batteries designed to extend the range and mission capability of unmanned aerial vehicles.
The energy storage initiative, meanwhile, will focus on developing a durable, large-capacity battery system capable of supporting the increasing power demands of AI data centres and modern power grids.
“This partnership underscores our shared commitment to reshoring advanced battery manufacturing in North America and accelerating the electrification of critical industries,” commented the CEO.
Trading on the TSXV as NBM, NEO—which recently expanded overseas—was established in 2006 as Pan Andean Minerals before rebranding in 2021.
The Canadian company this year established Canada’s first advanced silicon anode manufacturing facility.
