Alberta Showing How Economic Growth and Emissions Reductions Can Go Hand in Hand

September 22, 2026 by Knowlton Thomas

Alberta is hard at work promoting the province’s “responsible energy” sector worldwide.

Alberta, the first jurisdiction in North America to put a price on industrial carbon emissions back in 2007, has invested $1.8 billion into innovation and technology through the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction fund since 2019, and achieved its methane emissions reduction target three years ahead of schedule, cutting methane emissions by more than half since 2014.

This week, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas Grant Hunter is in New York City to showcase how the region is reducing emissions while growing its economy through producing energy responsibly.

At Climate Week NYC, Hunter will taker advantage of the “opportunity to share Alberta’s story, learn from others and build partnerships that will help drive innovation, economic growth and environmental progress for years to come.”

The minister intends to participate in meetings and events focused on emissions reduction, technology, energy innovation, and investment.

“Alberta is showing the world that economic growth and emissions reductions can go hand in hand,” Hunter remarked. “We are reducing emissions, attracting investment, and creating jobs while responsibly developing our natural resources.”

Energy and Minerals Minister Brian Jean, meanwhile, will be at the 2026 Carbon Capture Global Summit.

The Summit is an international forum focused on accelerating carbon capture, utilization, and storage deployment through investment, policy, and collaboration.

“Alberta is the global leader in [carbon capture, utilization, and storage],” Jean stated. “I’m proud to represent a province dedicated to responsible energy development. CCUS will make the greatest impacts when governments, researchers and industry work together, which is why events like this are so important.”

Minister Jean will meet with European stakeholders to encourage market diversification and emphasize Alberta’s commitment to supporting global energy security and engage international partners, according to an official itinerary.
