A Canadian cleantech innovator has successfully completed safety certification testing for a marine shore power solution.
Vancouver’s VoltSafe is aiming to reinvent the age-old electrical plug, replacing prongs with patented magnetic technology and an “electrical fingerprint” to deliver safer, smarter power connections.
VoltSafe recently passed safety certification testing for its proprietary high-power, prong-free electrical connection system that the innovator describes as “the most advanced way to connect to and control electricity.”
“We didn’t set out to build another electrical product,” cofounder Trevor Burgess explains. “We set out to fundamentally change how high-power electricity is connected, delivered, and managed.”
The milestone validates years of engineering and intellectual property development, according to a statement from the Canadian company, and positions VoltSafe to begin commercializing its technology across the marina market as well as a much broader range of electrical infrastructure applications.
“This is the moment we’ve been building toward since founding VoltSafe,” says chief executive officer Burgess.
“With testing complete,” he says, “we’re ready to take our technology into the market at scale.”
VoltSafe’s initial focus is the marine market, a multi-billion-dollar opportunity in an industry ripe for modernization.
The company’s integrated platform combines patented magnetic connection technology, intelligent dockside hardware, and cloud-based software to improve safety and reduce costs.
While originally designed for aquatic applications, VoltSafe already intends to apply its technology outside the marina market. The company’s website lists use cases across home, automotive, electric vehicles, emergency services, armed forces, and data centres.
“Successfully completing certification testing provides a foundation for applying our platform to many applications where conventional electrical connections can limit safety, automation, and electrification,” affirms cofounder and CTO Sanad Aridah.
Last year, VoltSafe joined The Port of San Diego’s Blue Economy Incubator, securing US$250,000 to launch a pilot program in one of the world’s top marina markets.
The upstart also piloted its solution at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club’s Jericho marina through Innovate BC’s Integrated Marketplace program.
