Foresight Canada, in collaboration with econext, has unveiled the Clean Energy Infrastructure Optimization Innovation Challenge, a new initiative aimed at advancing technology solutions that reduce maintenance costs and enhance the operational performance of remote clean energy infrastructure in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL).
The challenge seeks innovative solutions for the province’s key energy assets, including wind turbines, transmission lines, storage systems, and both small- and large-scale generation facilities. With NL emerging as a leader in clean energy, the challenge focuses on improving the efficiency of these vital assets to maintain the province’s competitive edge in the global energy sector.
Newfoundland and Labrador’s clean energy landscape is rich with potential. The province boasts a nearly 100% renewable energy-powered electricity grid and significant energy storage capacity that supports long-term grid stability. With abundant natural resources, access to land and freshwater, and established port infrastructure, NL is positioned for future development in green hydrogen and large-scale energy projects.
The Clean Energy Infrastructure Optimization Challenge will play a key role in ensuring that NL can maximize its productivity while meeting national net-zero targets. By encouraging the development of advanced technologies, the province can continue to grow its clean energy industry, supporting both economic development and environmental sustainability.
The challenge invites Canadian innovators to present technology solutions that can optimize the performance of NL’s clean energy infrastructure. The winner of the competition will have the opportunity to receive up to $50K in cash prizes, along with tailored support to accelerate the development of their proposed solutions. In addition to financial incentives, the winning innovators will gain exposure to industry stakeholders, opening doors to further commercialization and partnership opportunities.
Key industry players, including ABO Energy, EverWind Fuels, North Atlantic, Pattern Energy, World Energy GH2, Newfoundland Power, and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, are backing the challenge. Their involvement underscores the importance of addressing operational challenges and promoting sustainable energy growth.
As NL continues to grow its clean energy sector, innovation is critical to maintaining its competitive advantage. The province’s transition to green energy technologies, including wind-to-hydrogen projects and hydroelectric developments, positions it for significant economic growth. Foresight Canada’s innovation challenge is designed to connect industries with practical, de-risked cleantech solutions that drive both sustainability and economic advancement.
Jeanette Jackson, CEO of Foresight Canada, expressed the importance of this collaboration: “We are honoured to collaborate with econext on this challenge, deepening our connection with the Atlantic provinces. Clean energy infrastructure is a critical gateway to decarbonization, and by linking the right innovations, we can deliver high-impact solutions that will drive sustainability and economic growth across Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond.”
Kieran Hanley, CEO of econext, shared similar enthusiasm: “The clean energy opportunity in Newfoundland and Labrador is tremendous. From wind-to-hydrogen projects to large hydroelectric developments, we are on the verge of significant green economic growth. We are excited to be working with Foresight Canada on this challenge and to draw attention to the groundbreaking work happening in our province.”
As Newfoundland and Labrador continues to position itself as a leader in clean energy, this challenge is a vital step in harnessing the power of innovation to shape the future of the province’s energy landscape.
