Vancouver’s Daanaa, known for its breakthroughs in power system electronics and semiconductor technology, has unveiled Zodiac—a cutting‐edge power electronics solution designed for photovoltaic (PV) modules. The new technology is set to simplify installation and boost system performance by integrating key functions directly into the module.
Traditional solar systems often face energy losses because cells are connected in series. In such setups, even minor issues with one cell can reduce the performance of the entire system. Moreover, the need for external power electronics to handle functions like inversion and rapid shutdown complicates installation and increases maintenance costs.
Zodiac changes the game by embedding DC optimization, inversion, rapid shutdown, and diagnostic functions at the substring level—smaller groups of solar cells that make up a module. This design allows each substring to operate at its peak performance independently, eliminating the need for additional external components. As a result, manufacturers can offer PV modules that are not only easy to install and operate but also deliver enhanced reliability and energy output.
According to the announcement, Zodiac can boost energy harvest by 15% on average, and up to 42% in scenarios with significant shading. With fewer connectors and power electronics cascaded in the system, installation is simplified and maintenance needs are reduced. Advanced monitoring and diagnostics further ensure that any issues are quickly detected and resolved, minimizing system downtime and reducing long-term costs.
Detailed analysis validated at IEEE PVSC supports these claims, showing that reducing the substring size significantly increases energy harvest, particularly in challenging environments.
“The solar industry has long faced challenges with power losses and system complexity due to external power electronics dependencies,” said Udi Daon, CEO of Daanaa. “Zodiac addresses these issues by embedding multiple functionalities at the PV module’s substring level. This innovation simplifies system design and installation while enhancing reliability and energy generation, paving the way for more resilient and high-performing solar solutions. We’re excited to offer manufacturers the opportunity to experience Zodiac firsthand.”
With prototypes now available for evaluation, Daanaa’s Zodiac is poised to offer a faster return on investment and lower overall costs compared to conventional PV solutions, potentially reshaping the future of solar energy.
