Wheaton Precious Metals has named ReThink Milling as the winner of its inaugural Future of Mining Challenge, awarding the company US $1 million for its Conjugate Anvil Hammer Mill (CAHM) and MonoRoll technologies.
ReThink Milling’s innovative grinding solutions promise to significantly reduce energy consumption, operating costs, and greenhouse gas emissions in the mining sector.
Launched in September 2024, the Future of Mining Challenge invited global applicants to propose scalable solutions to improve operational efficiencies while minimizing environmental impact. The competition, supported by Foresight Canada, focused on identifying breakthrough technologies capable of lowering carbon footprints in mining operations.
“Constant innovation is essential to responsibly meet the growing global demand for minerals and metals,” said Randy Smallwood, President and CEO of Wheaton Precious Metals. “ReThink Milling’s winning technology represents a transformative step forward, and we are pleased to support them as they advance toward commercialization.”
ReThink Milling’s CAHM Platform Technology has gained traction, backed by nine leading mining companies and industry partners. The technology aims to enhance grinding efficiency, a critical aspect of mineral processing, by reducing the industry’s reliance on high-energy-intensive methods.
“We are thrilled to see our technology recognized for its potential economic and environmental benefits,” said Steve Wilson, CTO of ReThink Milling. “Engaging directly with mining companies has been instrumental in refining our approach. With this award, we are eager to scale our technology closer to mine sites and accelerate commercialization.”
Jeanette Jackson, CEO of Foresight Canada, highlighted the challenge’s impact, emphasizing the role of cleantech innovation in reshaping the mining industry. “By connecting innovators with industry leaders, we’re fostering solutions that drive productivity and build a more sustainable economy,” she said.
With the financial boost from Wheaton Precious Metals, ReThink Milling is set to further develop its technology, paving the way for greater adoption across mining operations worldwide.
