Energy Storage Canada (ESC) honored five key players in the country’s energy storage industry during the third annual Energy Storage Canada Awards. The awards were presented on the first evening of the ninth annual Energy Storage Canada Conference, the only national conference dedicated to energy storage, celebrating the sector’s growing influence on Canada’s energy landscape.
The highlight of this year’s awards was the 2024 Friend of Energy Storage Award, which was presented to the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). Since 2012, IESO has been instrumental in supporting the integration of energy storage into Ontario’s electricity grid through its early and consistent engagement with industry stakeholders. These efforts culminated in one of the largest energy storage procurements in North America and the largest in Canada, with over 3,000 MW of energy storage secured.
In a joint recognition, Matt Jamieson, CEO of Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation, and Mark B. Hill, former Chief of Six Nations of the Grand River and current Principal Partner at Rezolve Strategies, were honored with the 2024 Pioneer in Energy Storage Award. Both were pivotal in the development of Canada’s first large-scale battery energy storage project, the Oneida BESS, which is co-owned by an Indigenous community. Their work has set a precedent for future partnerships between First Nations communities and the energy storage industry.
The 2024 Energy Storage Milestone Award went to Canadian manufacturer Invinity Energy Systems, recognized for expanding its manufacturing facility in British Columbia. The facility can now produce 200 MWh of vanadium flow batteries annually, strengthening Canada’s capacity for large-scale energy storage projects.
Rodan Energy Solutions was awarded the 2024 Landmark Application of Energy Storage Award for its innovative integration of a battery energy storage system (BESS) with an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) system. This unique solution was implemented for a glass manufacturer in Collingwood, Ontario, enhancing reliability and scalability.
ESC Executive Director, Justin Rangooni, remarked on the increasing momentum within the industry: “Each year we’re seeing more projects announced, more development taking place, and more awareness of the potential of energy storage to contribute to Canada’s future grid across the country.”
The annual Energy Storage Canada Awards continue to shine a spotlight on the leadership and innovation driving the country’s transition to a net-zero future, recognizing the crucial role energy storage plays in this journey.
