E3 Lithium Advances Battery-Grade Lithium Carbonate Production

September 26, 2024 by Robert Lewis

Calgary-based E3 Lithium, a leader in Canadian lithium production, has successfully commissioned its demonstration-scale carbonate conversion reactors, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to establish a reliable lithium production facility in Alberta. The reactors enable the company to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate using equipment that mirrors commercial systems, though on a smaller scale.

The successful commissioning of the carbonation reactors follows a series of rigorous tests confirming the system’s efficiency and reliability, consistently meeting necessary reaction conditions. These reactors will eventually be integrated into E3 Lithium’s previously announced demonstration facility, where operational parameters will be further validated.

This achievement comes as part of E3 Lithium’s recent expansion of its Calgary-based lab, which was upgraded to include advanced equipment designed to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate. The lab’s focus has been on the procurement and development of processes to ensure safe and efficient operations. Future testing will concentrate on optimizing the reactors’ performance, aiming to scale up production while maintaining accuracy, cost-effectiveness, and operational flexibility.

Chris Doornbos, President and CEO of E3 Lithium, emphasized the importance of this breakthrough in enhancing the company’s capabilities. “By expanding our Calgary lab with advanced equipment and know-how for producing battery-grade lithium carbonate, E3 can advance its engineering initiatives with more efficiency and lower cost,” Doornbos stated. “These developments strengthen E3’s ability to establish a reliable and competitive lithium supply in Alberta.”

With the demand for battery-grade lithium rising across North America, E3 Lithium’s advancements position the company as a key player in meeting the region’s growing energy needs.

Doornbos is participating in the upcoming Energy Disruptors: UNITE 2024 conference in Calgary. He’ll be one of seven CEOs that represent a combined total of more than $1B invested to commercialize and scale revolutionary energy and climate solutions at scale.
