Canadian Solar Opens Global Headquarters in Kitchener

January 20, 2025 by Robert Lewis

Canadian Solar, a global leader in solar power and renewable energy, has officially opened its new global headquarters in Kitchener, marking a significant milestone in its 23-year history.

Founded in 2001 by Dr. Shawn Qu in Guelph, Canadian Solar has grown from a startup into a global powerhouse with approximately 20,000 employees and operations in over 20 countries. The new Kitchener office will serve as the company’s corporate headquarters and house several subsidiary businesses, including e-STORAGE and the module sales and services units.

“This is a pivotal moment for Canadian Solar,” said Dr. Qu, Chairman and CEO of Canadian Solar. “While we have grown into a global organization, our roots remain deeply embedded in Ontario, where our journey began. This new headquarters is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and innovation, as we continue to provide clean energy solutions to customers worldwide from right here in Ontario.”

Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic welcomed the company’s decision to establish its headquarters in the city, highlighting the alignment with the region’s innovation ecosystem. “Canadian Solar will be an important part of Kitchener’s thriving economy, bringing new jobs and technologies to cultivate a sustainable future,” he said.

The facility will also serve as a hub for e-STORAGE, Canadian Solar’s energy storage division. Colin Parkin, President of e-STORAGE, emphasized the strategic importance of the new headquarters. “This office will foster collaboration and drive the next wave of innovation in energy storage solutions. I’m proud of what we will achieve together,” he said.

Thomas Koerner, Corporate Senior Vice President of Canadian Solar, noted the company’s commitment to advancing renewable energy technologies. “The opening of our global headquarters in Kitchener is a bold step forward in aligning the company’s vision with its roots. It reinforces Canadian Solar’s leadership in the global energy transition,” he stated.

As Canadian Solar continues to expand its operations globally, the Kitchener headquarters symbolizes both a homecoming to its Ontario origins and a launchpad for future innovation in renewable energy.
