Honouring Suzanne West’s Legacy with Environmental Excellence Award

June 6, 2025 by Stephen Lewis

The Suzanne West Environmental Excellence Award is presented annually at the Global Energy Show Canada event to recognize outstanding environmental initiatives in the energy sector. Named in honour of Suzanne West, a pioneering force in Canadian energy, the award celebrates innovations that minimize or eliminate the environmental footprint of the energy industry.

Suzanne West was a visionary leader who made a lasting impact on the energy sector through her advocacy for environmental stewardship. Her work focused on transforming the energy industry’s environmental performance, with a dedication that spanned from her early career at Imperial Oil and Gulf Canada to her founding and leadership of Imaginea Energy, a company which emphasized environmental technology.

Suzanne’s untimely passing in 2018 at the age of 52 left a profound void, but her legacy continues to inspire environmental excellence in the industry.

Last year’s award went to Eavor, a Calgary-based company that developed the innovative Eavor-Loop, a geothermal power system capable of generating continuous clean energy. This technology overcomes traditional geothermal limitations by utilizing a closed-loop fluid circulation system to extract heat from deep subsurface rock, offering a scalable, sustainable solution to the world’s energy challenges.

This year, the award category continues to showcase Canada’s leadership in clean energy, with these impressive finalists:

Greengate Power – Calgary, Alberta

The Travers Solar project is one of the largest solar power developments in southern Alberta, spanning over 3,300 acres and generating 400 MW of renewable energy, enough to power 100,000 homes. It contributes significantly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting Canada’s clean energy goals. Greengate has already been noted as a clean energy company to check out this year.

Petroleum Technology Research Centre – Regina, Saskatchewan

PTRC’s Aquistore is a unique CO2 injection and monitoring project that has been operational since 2015. The industrial-scale injection of CO2 helps mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, marking a critical step in advancing carbon capture and storage technologies.

The Suzanne West Environmental Excellence Award remains a powerful symbol of Suzanne’s lasting impact on the industry, honouring those continuing her mission of reducing environmental footprints through innovative solutions.
