Combatting Methane Emissions: Canadian Innovators Compete for Methane Impact Innovation Award

June 9, 2025 by Stephen Lewis

Methane emissions contribute to global warming at a significantly faster rate than carbon dioxide, making their reduction essential in the fight against climate change.

The Emissions Reduction Theatre at Global Energy Show Canada 2025 being held in Calgary from June 10-12 will be hosting discussions and presentations from leaders in methane emissions reduction, providing attendees with insights into the technologies and strategies that are reshaping the industry.

A new Methane Impact Innovation Award is also being introduced at the event this year to recognize companies that are leading the charge in minimizing methane emissions across the energy sector. The award will celebrate innovations in methane detection, capture, and abatement technologies, as well as best practices that reduce methane leaks and emissions.

Three Canadian companies are competing for the award, each offering unique solutions to mitigate methane emissions and push the energy industry closer to sustainability.

Calgary’s Kathairos Solutions is tackling methane venting at remote well sites with an innovative system that uses nitrogen (an inert, non-polluting gas) to operate pneumatic devices. The technology eliminates the need for methane as an instrument gas, significantly reducing methane venting during routine operations. Kathairos’ approach offers an effective, affordable, and scalable solution for well sites in remote locations.

GHGSat from Montreal is a leader in high-resolution satellite emissions monitoring. With the world’s largest fleet of satellites dedicated to methane detection, GHGSat provides rapid and accurate data that can pinpoint methane emissions at their source. Their technology enables governments, industries, and financial institutions to quickly address emissions, contributing to the acceleration of global decarbonization efforts.

Based in Pouce Coupe, B.C., Forefront Energy’s Zero-Methane Technology Portfolio provides a comprehensive solution for eliminating methane venting at well sites. The company’s MRK Power System, HD-Control, and Air-Control systems replace methane-venting pneumatics with electric or hydraulic alternatives, reducing emissions and increasing efficiency. Their solar-first, battery-backed MRK Power System and low-energy HD-Control are key to making well-site automation more sustainable and cost-effective.

These innovative companies are at the forefront of efforts to reduce methane emissions, and their strategies have the potential to transform the energy sector. As the energy industry continues to focus on reducing its environmental impact, the Emissions Reduction Theatre and new Methane Impact Innovation Award can shine a spotlight on those leading the way in emissions reduction.

Stay tuned to CleanEnergy.ca and Calgary.tech for updates on the event and to find out who takes home this year’s hardware at the awards ceremony on June 12.
