Foresight Canada has released a new series of export-focused studies spotlighting the global potential of British Columbia’s cleantech sectors.
The four-part series outlines pathways for BC companies to expand their international reach across water, mining, the forest bioeconomy, and clean transportation—sectors where the province has strong innovation ecosystems and growing global relevance.
Each report identifies key market opportunities, challenges, and policy insights designed to help BC ventures scale their impact worldwide. The studies were authored by Foresight Canada with support from sector-specific contributors.
Water Technology
The Water Technology report highlights the urgent need for sustainable water solutions worldwide. With increasing threats to water security due to climate change, population growth, and aging infrastructure, demand for innovative technologies is surging.
BC’s growing water tech sector is well-positioned to meet this demand. The province’s strengths in advanced treatment, monitoring, and reuse technologies give it a competitive edge in international markets. The report points to regions like the southwestern U.S., Southeast Asia, and the Middle East as prime export opportunities.
Mining Technology
As the global push for critical minerals accelerates, BC’s cleantech innovators have an important role to play in modernizing the mining industry. The Mining Technology report explores how BC firms can support sustainable practices in an emissions-intensive sector that is central to the clean energy transition.
From mine electrification to tailings management, BC-based technologies can help reduce environmental impacts while meeting global supply demands. The report stresses the need for early-stage ventures to adopt global strategies to stay competitive in an increasingly international industry.
Forest Bioeconomy
British Columbia’s abundant forest biomass and mature forestry sector provide a foundation for a growing forest-based cleantech economy. The Forest Bioeconomy report identifies rising global interest in renewable, high-value bioproducts as a key driver of export opportunity.
With strong research institutions and proven supply chains, BC is positioned to lead in markets seeking alternatives to petroleum-based products. The report encourages greater investment in scaling technologies and navigating international regulatory frameworks to unlock the province’s export potential.
Clean Transportation
BC has emerged as a clean transportation leader—home to early policy mandates, deep R&D capacity, and fast-growing startups. The Clean Transportation Technologyy report explores export prospects for BC companies advancing zero-emission vehicles, hydrogen fuel cells, and electrified mobility.
The report notes that BC was the first jurisdiction in the world to legislate a 100% zero-emission vehicle sales mandate, giving the province a head start in both policy and innovation. Export pathways are especially strong in Europe, California, and East Asia, where governments are rapidly decarbonizing transportation systems.
Charting a Global Course
Together, these reports offer a strategic roadmap for scaling BC’s cleantech innovations in global markets. As international demand for climate solutions continues to grow, BC’s cleantech ventures are poised to become key players in the global clean economy.
