Wheaton Launches Second Annual Future of Mining Challenge with $1M Prize

July 3, 2025 by Newsdesk

Wheaton Precious Metals is once again calling on global cleantech innovators to help shape the future of sustainable mining, announcing the return of its Future of Mining Challenge with a $1 million prize for breakthrough water management technology.

The 2025/26 edition of the challenge builds on the success of its inaugural year and seeks to uncover solutions that improve operational efficiency while minimizing environmental impacts in the mining sector. The competition is open to ventures worldwide and is focused this year on advancing sustainable water management—an increasingly critical area for mining companies navigating environmental responsibility and resource constraints.

“Constant innovation is essential to responsibly meet the growing global demand for minerals and metals, and it is the driving force behind Wheaton’s Future of Mining Challenge,” said Randy Smallwood, President and CEO of Wheaton Precious Metals. “As a partner to some of the world’s leading mining companies, Wheaton is uniquely positioned to support the industry as it advances the delivery of essential commodities and materials in a more sustainable manner.”

Wheaton’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Patrick Drouin, emphasized the challenge’s mission to accelerate commercialization of promising technologies. “Our hope is that the award will help to advance the challenge winner’s technology closer to commercialization,” he said.

Expressions of interest will be accepted until Friday, August 29, 2025. Selected ventures will be invited to submit full applications in September. The winner will be announced at the PDAC Convention in Toronto in March 2026, the world’s largest mining conference.

This year’s challenge is being delivered in collaboration with Creative Destruction Lab-Vancouver at the University of British Columbia’s Sauder School of Business, adding academic and entrepreneurial firepower to Wheaton’s effort to catalyze cleantech innovation in mining.
