Convertus Group Secures Approval to Break Ground on Innovative Biofuel Facility in York

August 11, 2025 by Knowlton Thomas

A Canadian entity has received the necessary approvals and permits to build a Biofuel facility in Ontario.

London’s Convertus Group is plotting to break ground on a major biofuel facility in the York Region, the waste innovator announced recently.

The company is known for partnering with municipalities and businesses to design, build, and operate sustainable organic waste treatment facilities.

Arun Gudla, who serves Convertus as vice president of strategic initiatives, is overseeing project development in York.

“Finalizing all the permit requirements is a major achievement that allows us to move from planning to construction,” says Gudla, who expects the facility to be operational by the end of 2027.

“These approvals are the result of close collaboration with local and provincial authorities,” the project lead continued, “and will ensure we remain on course to deliver a facility that embodies Convertus’ mission to close the loop for a more sustainable and circular approach to waste management.”

Convertus York will be the first biofuel plant in Canada to incorporate integrated CO2 liquefaction technology, according to Gudla, processing up to 200,000 tons of organic waste annually from the Regional Municipality of York and surrounding areas using advanced anaerobic tech that could reduce annual CO2 emissions by up to 15,000 tonnes.

All materials received will be converted into renewable natural gas and nutrient-rich organic fertilizers. The process is expected to generate up to 400,000 gigajoules of clean energy per year, enough to heat approximately 5,000 homes.

Convertus Group was established in 2019 through a merger between Renewi Canada and Waste Treatment Technologies.

In 2022, they acquired New Brunswick’s Envirem Organics, which marked Convertus’ entry into the consumer market with its first series of branded bagged compost products.

In June, Convertus acquired Calgary-based waste management firm AIM Group.

“In combining two industry leaders with successful track records, we are solidifying our presence as Canada’s largest organic waste processor, allowing us to better serve our customers and fulfill our mission to close the loop and create a sustainable future for all,” Convertus CEO Mike Leopold stated at the time of the transaction.

Today, the firm employs 400 people across Canada.
