While some provinces such as British Columbia remain stubbornly anti-nuclear, others like Ontario are welcoming the clean energy source with open arms.
In this vein, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization is moving forward with plans to establish a Centre of Expertise in Ontario.
Founded in 2002, the NWMO is a not-for-profit entity tasked with safe, long-term management of radioactive waste in Canada.
For example, the NWMO intends to isolate used nuclear fuel within a deep geological repository.
The nonprofit entity recently unveiled that private engineering firm CIMA Canada has been tapped to complete design and construction drawings, as well as technical specifications and cost estimates for the facility.
The Centre of Expertise, to be located in Ignace, is expected to open in 2028 as a hub for research and development as well as community engagement. The concept was initially discussed in 2019.
“The announcement to move forward with the design, development, and construction of the Centre of Expertise in Ignace is another incredible advancement to illustrate that this facility is indeed one step closer to reality,” remarked Kim Baigrie, the Mayor of Ignace.
CIMA+ is slated to lead the project from their Thunder Bay office as prime consultant in collaboration with experts from Unity Design Studio, i4architecture, Warrior Engineering, Turner & Townsend, Woodland Heritage Northwest, and Scatliff + Miller + Murray.
“CIMA+ and its partners … are honoured to contribute to the NWMO Centre of Expertise in Ignace,” stated Yannick Maltais, Executive Vice-President of CIMA+. “This meaningful initiative embodies our collective dedication to sustainable development, environmental responsibility, and authentic engagement with local communities.”
The Centre of Expertise “will bring regional educational opportunities and visitors from across Canada and the world,” according to NWMO chief executive officer Laurie Swami. “We are looking forward to seeing it come to life in the next few years.”
Laval’s CIMA+ this year launched a Consulting and Strategic Advisory Services department with a specific focus on climatech solutions.
The company already boasts a history in the clean energy sector, having worked on more than 400 hydroelectric dams, as well as wind, solar, and geothermal projects.
Founded in 1990, CIMA+ employs over 3,500 people across 40 offices throughout Canada.
