Alberta-based Northstar Clean Technologies recently unveiled the launch of a new product line.
The Canadian cleantech is a developer of waste-to-value technology—specifically, the sustainable recovery and reprocessing of asphalt shingles as part of a circular economy.
The latest product from Northstar is oriented around separating and recovering limestone from shingles.
Limestone, added to improve durability and longevity of shingles, is specially removed via Northstar’s proprietary process.
This process, which has been patented in the U.S. until 2045, arrives in addition to the existing product lines of liquid or pelletized asphalt, aggregate, and fibreglass.
“By extracting limestone directly from asphalt shingles, we’ve been able to establish both a fourth product line for the Company and … deliver a final asphalt product with high-quality characteristics,” stated Aidan Mills, chief executive officer of Northstar.
The patent, meanwhile, “adds further protection to Northstar’s intellectual property portfolio while strengthening our first-mover advantage,” the CEO stated, adding that “We believe the high quality of our asphalt will continue to provide significant differentiation for Northstar in the global marketplace.”
Emphasizing the circular economy, Northstar intends to reprocess used and defective asphalt shingle waste back into primary components for resale through a commercial facility in Calgary.
Northstar unveiled the Empower Calgary Facility, whose launch was supported by the Business Development Bank of Canada, earlier this year.
The Calgary upstart trades publicly on the TSX Venture Exchange as ROOF.
