PrePad, an emerging energy technology company from Calgary, has been awarded the 2025 Meritorious Award for Engineering Innovation in the Digital Oilfield category by Hart Energy, a leading U.S. energy industry information provider.
The recognition highlights PrePad’s Completions Module, the energy industry’s first completions process simulator which is designed to help operators simulate cost and time implications at every decision point and discover optimal trade-offs among production, cost, cycle time, emissions, and risk.
“Congratulations to PrePad,” said Darren Barbee, a Senior Managing Editor at Hart Energy, which runs the annual competition. “The ability to integrate cost, time, and production interdependencies in a single, user-friendly product was recognized by judges as significant for the industry.”
PrePad’s approach has been redefining how unconventional well projects are planned and executed. By moving away from spreadsheets and offering a cloud-based universal completions simulation model, the company has developed a tool that provides a more accurate, real-time analysis of key variables. This business model—offered as SaaS—helps operators test decisions in seconds and quantify trade-offs with precision, aligning with broader industry goals of efficiency and sustainability.
“We’re honoured to receive this year’s Meritorious Award for Engineering Innovation in the Digital Oilfield category,” said Sean Hervo, Co-Founder and CEO of PrePad. “It’s a powerful recognition of the value PrePad brings to the energy sector by optimizing well design, cost management, and operational efficiency in ways that were previously impossible.”
Brandon Eidson, PrePad’s Co-Founder, President, and Chief Product Officer, noted: “Our software empowers energy companies, before they’ve spent any money, to model real-world trade-offs under complex, constrained scenarios.”
The judging panel for Hart Energy’s awards includes engineers and scientists from operating and consulting companies, underscoring the industry credibility of the recognition.
In addition to this award, PrePad has been steadily building momentum. It was recognized as the Disruptive Digital Innovator at the Global Energy Show Canada in 2024. The company has been selected for Chevron Technology Ventures’ Catalyst Program, which is aimed at accelerating technology innovation in the energy sector. PrePad is one of a handful of Canadian companies to be selected. In April 2025, PrePad announced it had raised $3.9 million in seed funding to advance its growth plans.
With headquarters in both Calgary and Houston, PrePad has a strong and growing presence across North America. Its client base includes industry leaders such as Chevron, Devon Energy, Coterra Energy, Shell Canada, Whitecap Resources, Birchcliff Energy, Teine Energy, and Cygnet Energy. As the company continues to innovate and expand, the Hart Energy award further cements its reputation as a pioneer in digital oilfield technology.
