A Vancouver-based innovator of solid sorbent-based carbon capture and removal solutions this week revealed a collaboration with Sweden’s largest forest-owner association.
B.C.-based Svante Technologies will work with Södra as well as Swedish research institute RISE to test the Canadian upstart’s carbon capture technology at the Värö industrial site in 2026 and evaluate opportunities for large-scale capture in the future, according to a statement from the organizations.
“Carbon capture is no longer just about emissions reduction,” suggests Mark Claessen, who heads Svante’s business unit. “It’s about resource efficiency and climate-positive innovation.”
The pilot project—partially funded through Industriklivet undernthe Next Generation EU programme—marks Svante’s first deployment in Europe’s forestry sector and also represents a significant step toward scaling biogenic carbon capture in pulp and paper production, according to Claessen.
Södra’s pulp production generates biogenic CO₂, which is a renewable carbon source with potential applications across food, water purification, chemical manufacturing, and more.
By capturing and refining this source, the pilot aims to unlock revenue streams and extend the value of forest raw materials without increasing harvesting.
“Jointly with Södra we have the potential to capture and remove over one million tonnes of biogenic CO₂ annually,” noted Claessen.
“We’re excited to work on this project to demonstrate how our sustainable high-performance capture technology can help decarbonize industrial operations at commercial scale,” he stated.
Jenny Gotthardsson, who functions as General Manager of Södra Cell Värö, says that “by conducting trials with Svante’s technology in our own environment, we’re building expertise tailored to our operations.”
“This is an important step in strengthening our competitiveness and the profitability of forest estates,” Gotthardsson remarked.
Last month, Svante was named “Ambition Company of the Year” at the 2025 Technology Impact Awards.
The company also made the 2025 Global Cleantech 100 as well as TIME & Statista’s list of Top Greentech Companies of 2025.
Last year, Svante raised $137M to accelerate development.
