CO280 Solutions Takes ‘Critical Step’ Toward Deploying Carbon Capture at Scale in U.S.

November 19, 2025 by Knowlton Thomas

CO280 Solutions has successfully completed a field pilot with a a pulp and paper manufacturer to validate the performance of liquid amine technology to capture biogenic carbon dioxide from recovery boiler stack emissions at a mill along the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The Vancouver-based cleantech worked alongside SLB Capturi, a supplier of carbon capture technology for industrial sectors, to complete the pilot.

SLB Capturi’s Mobile Test Unit was installed at the mill site last year, where it has since operated for more than 4,000 hours, achieving a consistent capture rate efficiency of 95%.

“This critical milestone clears the way for deploying commercial-scale carbon capture and removal projects at pulp and paper mills,” suggests Jonathan Rhone, cofounder and chief executive officer of CO280.

The pulp and paper industry in North America produces over 100 million tonnes of biogenic CO2 annually.

CO280 retrofits existing mills with modular carbon capture units to capture and permanently store biogenic CO2, delivering affordable removal at scale.

“Our goal is to lead the world in carbon dioxide removal that sets the highest standards of permanence, quality, and affordability at scale,” Rhone said. “The success of the MTU pilot with SLB Capturi marks a critical step towards achieving that goal and delivering low-cost, low-risk CDR to our customers.”

The test campaign was “a huge success,” agrees Egil Fagerland, CEO of SLB.

“The strong performance and results of the MTU at this mill validates all key process parameters and demonstrates that there are no technical barriers to deploying commercial-scale carbon capture plants,” he stated. “CO280 and SLB Capturi are now well-positioned to bring this proven solution to the pulp and paper industry.”

JPMorganChase this year agreed to purchase 450,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent over 13 years from a CO280 project. Microsoft, meanwhile, intends purchase 3.685 million tonnes of CDR over 12 years.

In response, CO280 is developing more than 10 carbon capture and removal projects at mills throughout Canada and the US.

CO280 was founded in 2021.
