A new report from Foresight Canada, Transforming Waste Rock: Insights & Opportunities for BC’s Mining Industry, highlights how British Columbia’s mining sector can turn its vast volumes of waste rock into economic and environmental value. The analysis points to opportunities for recovering critical minerals, strengthening supply chains and advancing cleantech solutions across the province’s resource landscape.
Waste rock — the material left after valuable ore is extracted — has long been a by-product of mining operations. But the report argues that with the right technologies and policy support, this material can be reimagined as a strategic resource. By identifying where critical minerals exist in existing waste stockpiles, BC’s mining sector could supply materials essential for electric vehicles, renewable energy systems and other clean technologies.
Foresight’s analysis also emphasises the importance of integrating cleantech innovators, infrastructure data and labour insights to support domestic processing and value creation. By bringing together stakeholders from industry, government and Indigenous communities, the report suggests BC could position itself as a global leader in sustainable mining and circular economy practices.
As global demand for critical minerals grows, leveraging previously overlooked resources like waste rock could help British Columbia meet climate goals while creating new economic opportunities in cleantech and mining supply chains.
