City of Stratford Garners $9.7M to Enhance Efficiency of Transit Fleet with Hybrid Buses

July 14, 2026 by Knowlton Thomas

A city of more than 33,000 Canadians is set to have a “greener, more efficient” transit system following a $10-million joint investment from federal, provincial, and municipal governments.

The City of Stratford will apply the capital toward improving the “efficiency and environmental performance of the transit fleet,” according to a statement.

This includes completing an array of different projects, including upgrading conventional buses to hybrid and electric versions.

“This investment reflects our commitment to building strong, reliable, and sustainable infrastructure in our communities,” stated Arielle Kayabaga, Member of Parliament for London West.

Some funds are also earmarked for other areas such as improving the customer service experience by making transit more reliable and accessible through the adoption of GPS tech and by other means.

“By renewing the City of Stratford’s bus fleet, upgrading key infrastructure, and improving accessibility, we are investing in a modern transit system that is dependable, inclusive, and ready for the future,” Kayabaga stated.

The investment is part of a $70B, province-wide expansion of transit in Ontario.

“Our government is investing $70 billion in the largest transit expansion in Canadian history,” says Matthew Rae, Member of Provincial Parliament, Perth—Wellington.

Stratford Mayor Martin Ritsma believes the joint investment is “another important demonstration of how effective partnerships can have a greater impact on a community, the residents we serve, and the environment where we live.”

A total of 14 projects will receive funding through the Public Transit Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

This stream supports the building, expansion, and upgrading of urban and rural transit networks in Canada.

Regions across Canada are seeking to make similar energy-conscious enhancements to their transit operations.

In 2025, both Fredericton and Calgary made moves to upgrade their fleets and services, for example, as did Brampton and even Whitehorse.
