
An electric mobility innovator operating out of British Columbia has developed something akin to LEGO Technic for adults.
ENVO Drive Systems has produced several different types of specialized vehicles during its decade-plus in business, each one engineered in-house to excel at specific tasks.
But the Utility Personal Transporter, or UPT, is all about modularity, placing the power of specificity into the consumer’s hands.
The company’s Modular Compact EV can be customized from the ground up. Starting with fundamentals like the chassis and suspension, users go through a long list of possible configurations, influencing everything from the drivetrain and steering to tires and accessories.
The platform targets customers and sectors that require specialized, compact mobility solutions.
“Configure the vehicle you actually need instead of buying a vehicle designed for somebody else’s job,” the company suggests.
The UPT is built on an aluminum T-slot frame. The length and width of the platform can be adjusted. And, regardless of configuration, the UPT is designed to collapse to become more transportable.
It is worth noting here the logic behind ENVO’s approach.
Kazemkhani believes that the future of green mobility should not be limited to electrified versions of traditional vehicle categories, and that the market needs more purpose-designed vehicles.
Purpose-designed vehicles can be challenging to commercialize, however, if each one requires its own dedicated frame, tooling, electronics, battery system, and assembly process.
That’s why ENVO developed a base platform upon which customers can build multiple configurations.
As a consequence of the many customizations, possible use cases for the UPT are vast—spanning Agriculture, Commuting, Construction, Emergency Response, Landscaping, Delivery, Military, and more.
There are also applications across academia.
“The UPT represents a leap forward in our journey,” chief executive officer Ali Kazemkhani stated when the technology was first unveiled in late 2024. “With its adaptable framework, the UPT is poised to redefine urban planning, emergency responses, and leisure, ensuring that our technology makes meaningful difference in people’s lives and in the environment.”
In 2026, working prototypes have already gone through “real conditions, rough terrain, job sites, and everyday use.” The UPT system is “built and proven.”
Now, it’s about what users can do with the technology.
