Community Energy Fund Supports 17 Projects Aimed at a More Sustainable Future

November 3, 2026 by Knowlton Thomas

A Canadian organization is investing in projects aimed at improving energy efficiency, advancing renewable sources, and increasing education and awareness of cleantech.

The funding hails from ATCO’s Community Energy Fund, which annually supports innovators across Alberta.

The 2026 intake of ATCO’s Fund attracted more than 100 applications. Following a comprehensive review process, 17 projects were selected for funding, including initiatives like renewable energy installations, energy efficiency upgrades, and community education programs from municipalities, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions.

“The Community Energy Fund supports projects that make a meaningful difference today while creating benefits for years to come,” explains Jason Sharpe, Chief Operating Officer at ATCO Energy Systems.

“This year’s recipients demonstrate the many ways Alberta communities are advancing energy efficiency, resilience, education, and sustainability,” he said.

For example, the Grande Prairie Women’s Residence Association will replace aging HVAC equipment at its residential facility to improve energy efficiency, reduce operating costs, and enhance comfort for residents.

“Every dollar we save on energy costs is a dollar that can be directed back into supporting women and families who rely on our services,” says Mikaela Benson, Executive Director for the Grande Prairie Women’s Residence Association. “Replacing our aging HVAC equipment will improve comfort and reliability for residents while helping ensure our facility remains sustainable for years to come.”

ATCO is also supporting the Southeastern Alberta Search and Rescue Association in Medicine Hat through its Energy Modernization & Emergency-Response Resilience Project. Funding there will support facility upgrades including LED lighting, HVAC improvements, and battery storage technology.

Municipalities garnering capital include the Town of Coronation, the Town of Grimshaw, the Town of Peace River, the Town of Vermilion, the Village of Alliance, and the unincorporated hamlet of Duffield.

Non-profit organizations receiving support include the Battle River Lending Place Society; the Boys and Girls Club of Olds and Area; the Brooks and District Museum and Historical Society; the Round Hill Renaissance Agriculture Foundation; and the Southeastern Alberta Search and Rescue Association.

Educational institutions attracting funding include Peace Wapiti School Division No. 76 and the University of Lethbridge.

“From supporting vulnerable residents through more efficient facilities to strengthening emergency preparedness and response capabilities, these projects show how local innovation can create lasting community impact,” Sharpe stated.
