NorthX Climate Tech and BC Hydro have launched a $5-million funding opportunity for Canadian companies developing technologies to help British Columbia manage growing electricity demand.
The Call for Innovation: Capacity & Energy Solutions will support technologies that shift, reduce, store or better manage electricity use. Individual investments will typically range from $250,000 to $1.5 million, covering up to 50 percent of eligible project costs. The funding is non-dilutive, meaning companies do not surrender equity.
The initiative builds on an existing partnership. As CleanEnergy.ca previously reported, NorthX partnered with BC Hydro in January 2025 on a $3-million energy storage innovation call.
That effort subsequently saw NorthX invest $1.6 million in Aqua-Cell Energy, FUTURi Power and Foreseeson Technology, supporting innovations spanning saltwater batteries, grid-connected vehicle and stationary storage, and storage integrated with fast EV charging.
The latest call is open to Canadian-incorporated companies with technologies at Technology Readiness Levels 4 through 9 and a clear route to commercialization. Priority will go to projects demonstrated in B.C. that improve grid capacity and flexibility, support industrial growth, strengthen reliability and affordability, or build the province’s clean technology supply chain.
The funding also complements NorthX’s work addressing barriers to deployment. In June, NorthX committed another $3 million to Moment Energy to help finance second-life battery storage installations in B.C. That investment addressed the gap between upfront project expenses and later customer payments and incentive reimbursements.
The first application window closes October 30, 2026, with funding decisions expected by the end of January 2027. Later applications may be considered in the first quarter of 2027, subject to remaining funding.
